To read and re-read Huizinga’s treatise on culture and play is a highly recommended exercise and through it one may gain an in-depth view of the germinal stage of our culture as play and the need to reflect on its cycle of growth, flowering and decline presents itself in the light of continuation which is the ultimate priority of all living everywhere
As so many people may be engrossed in other more important tasks and cannot find the time for philosophical pursuits, we have selected a number of citations throughout the entire book in the hope of either to whet people’s appetite or provide a context for Ludopolis as a ludic enactment of a possible other – continuing – world or to play a game of ‘future history’.
As quotations divorced from the context of their original discourse may often become misconstrued they are ordered here in chronology of chapter and page so that should the need for elucidation arise they may, with relative ease, be located within the above publication.
